After reading articles and watching short videos about social issues around gender, students silently discussed their reactions through a Chalk Talk. Click here to read some of those articles and watch those videos.
The class loves coding on Code.org. Each student is working on Course 2 at their own pace with a few class lessons on computer language and thinking. On December 11, we promoted an Hour of Code, and helped Ms. Schemmel's kindergarteners code. Some students have completed Course 2 and moved onto Course 3. A few students have chosen to create a video game or App for Genius Hour.
Students spend two hours each week exploring, researching and doing something that they choose. One requirement is that the topic is something they are passionate about and want to learn more. Please read the following article on Edutopia for more...
The students have worked tirelessly to prepare for the grand opening of the Low Tech Arcade on November 6th: completing their arcade games, writing directions, reflecting on the process, printing tickets, painting posters, creating invitations and prizes, and organizing the entire arcade. And having fun!
I'm proud of our readers. They have worked hard to support each other. Each reading partnership sits together and shares their ideas after independent reading time. We've learned to face our partners, look to show that we're listening, ask questions and share more than the plot (i.e., character actions and motivations, problems and solutions, text connections to self, other texts and the world). We decided that we needed to know what our customers would want in an arcade. So, we wrote 8 good questions, and went out into the field to interview 1st graders, 3rd and 4th graders, middle schoolers and high schoolers. Then we collected the data into charts. Finally, we decided that the charts were too messy to analyze and decided to create graphs - the graphs will be our work for next week. Take a look at the data collection process:
